At the University of California, Santa Barbara our goals is to approach environmental issues head on and innovate solutions to improve the environment. We use the campus as a living lab and everyone has a role to play in making the campus sustainable. We foster a culture of sustainability through supporting campus-wide efforts, coordinating program development, and publicizing sustainability work by students, staff, and faculty.

By 2014, UC Santa Barbara had already met the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions below 1990 levels by 2023. In 2017, campus GHG emissions were 19% below 1990 levels despite an almost doubling in campus building space.

The Sustainability Report includes a list of campus sustainability accomplishments and future goals. The report also provides a summary of campus awards, collaborations, and initiatives within sustainability over the last academic year.

Did you know that furniture can be a major source of toxic chemicals? To address this problem, UC Santa Barbara recently signed a pledge through the Center for Environmental Health to commit to purchasing safer furniture products to protect the health of the community and the global environment.
